This session in our oral history workshop series focuses on the steps one can take to make interviews more accessible to the public.
Oral History does not end once the mics are off. This core DC Oral History Collaborative workshop will help participants understand what oral historians do when the interviews are complete. We will discuss transcription and indexing, the importance of narrator feedback and ongoing consent. Additionally, the session will use case studies to explore ways oral historians and project directors have shared interviews back with their communities and with the public. What considerations are necessary when creating interpretive works like films, exhibits, digital humanities projects and curricula? How do we interpret and analyze memory while honoring narrators’ original ideas and intentions?
The DC Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) documents, preserves, and celebrates the lived experiences of all Washington, DC residents and communities through oral history. The Collaborative accomplishes this by providing training, mentorship, resources, programs, and funding to current and aspiring oral historians.
