Kalorama started out as farmland, but it quickly became one of Washington’s most prestigious neighborhoods—a hillside retreat that attracted presidents, power players, and even a few spies. Ever since diplomat Joel Barlow built his grand estate here in 1807, Kalorama has been home to more U.S. presidents than anywhere else besides the White House itself. Today, it is home to Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, the French Ambassador, and more.
On this tour, we’ll wander past some of the city’s most stunning pre-war architecture (Beaux Arts, French Renaissance Revival, even the flamboyant Churrigueresque) and hear stories that bring these blocks to life.
