Dr. Patrick Scallen speaks to the crowd at the Washington History Magazine reception on June 21, 2022.

We are all delighted to introduce Patrick D. Scallen, Ph.D. as our new editor of Washington History: Magazine of the DC History Center. Pat succeeds immediate past Editor Bell Julian Clement and, since January, Interim Editor Jane F. Levey.

Dr. Patrick Scallen is a historian specializing in U.S. Latinx and Latin American history and the history of Washington, DC. He has previously served as the archivist for the Smithsonian Latino Center’s Latino D.C. History Project and as the lead researcher for curriculum on US racial and immigration history at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

He is also a veteran high school history teacher in DC, including at Archbishop Carroll High School, and currently teaches Latinx History in the Department of Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies at American University.

Pat has a Ph.D. in History from Georgetown University, an M.A.T. in History from Brown University, an M.A. in History from Georgetown University, an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Tulane University, and a B.A. in History from Xavier University.

A 17-year resident of Washington, DC and a community-based oral historian of Mt. Pleasant, he is currently at work turning his doctoral dissertation, a history of metropolitan Washington’s Salvadoran immigrant community, into a book.

Pat is joining an outstanding team. Kasey Sease serves as managing editor. John DeFerrari is our review editor, and Anne Masters is the designer. Jane will support the transition and serve as co-editor of the fall issue.

Please join me in welcoming Pat! And if you already have an idea for an article, feel free to contact him directly at pscallen@dchistory.org starting July 1.
