How’s this for an awesome acronym tongue-twister: This fall the HSW and the AOI met with the FFA in the DCFEMSM in Engine Co.3!
Or rather, in the 150th year of the D.C. Fire & EMS Department, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., and the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of D.C., presented the Friendship Fire Association with several historical artifacts to be preserved, interpreted and displayed in the D.C. Fire & EMS Museum, housed on the third floor of historic D.C. Engine Co. 3 (439 New Jersey Avenue NW).
Operated by the volunteer Friendship Fire Association, the museum traces the history of the fire department back to the late 1700s, through fire buckets and fire boxes, with helmets and badges, and via a multitude of additional fire fighting gear. The recent transfer of material from the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and the Association of Oldest Inhabitants (AOI) marks a significant contribution to the museum’s collection, including magnificent parade hats and a fire chief’s belt.
On Saturday January 10, 2015, join the Historical Society, the AOI and the Friendship Fire Association for a free Historical Society members program at the D.C. Fire & EMS Museum! The program will feature a talk by local historian Jim Embrey about the long history of fire fighting in the District of Columbia, followed by a guided tour of the Museum’s collection. Led by curator Mark Tennyson, the tour will feature the recent donations from the Association of Oldest Inhabitants and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
Following the talk and tour, the conversation continues at Sixth Engine Restaurant at 438 Massachusetts Ave NW. From 12:30 – 2 p.m., join your fellow members for food and drinks at one of the oldest firehouses in the District, designed by Adolph Cluss. (Please note, restaurant tabs are the responsibility of individual attendees.)
Prior registration is required.
