If you need help learning to search the DC History Center’s collections via the online catalog or are seeking general guidance on how to start your research, library staff and volunteers can assist via email. Please address your query to library@dchistory.org. We regret that we cannot offer assistance by telephone at this time.

Quick Reference

Have a quick question? Need to know a date or a street address? Need to reference specific materials in our collection?

Email your question to library@dchistory.org and our staff and volunteers will search maps, broadsides, city directories, real estate atlases and other ready reference materials. Please provide specific names, addresses, years, collection names or IDs when applicable. We can provide up to 5 smartphone photographs of resources, for reference use only. 

For queries that require more in-depth consultation of materials in our collection, you will be referred to our paid research services option.

Paid Research Services

Have an in-depth query referencing materials in our collection?

For research questions that require more extensive consultation of materials in our collection, we are temporarily offering a paid research service option. For a flat fee of $50, a staff member will research on your behalf for up to one hour in the manuscript, photograph, printed materials, ephemera, and vertical files collections. Included in this service are up to 10 smartphone photographs of resources, for reference use only.

To use this service:

  • Search our online catalog to identify collections relevant to your question.
  • Email library@dchistory.org with your research question and information on the collections you would like searched.
  • A librarian will respond to discuss your request, confirm details, and a time-frame for delivery.
  • Your question will only be processed after payment is received.

Please note: Paid Research Service is for research in the Kiplinger Research Library’s archival collections only, and we cannot guarantee that an answer to your research question will be found in the time allotted. Once we resume appointments in the Kiplinger Research Library, access to these collections will be free of charge for in-person research.

Digital Reproduction Requests

Scans and high-resolution digital images of collection material are available for purchase. See our Reproductions and Permissions page for details on the order process, applicable fees, timeframe for delivery.

Please note, some materials in our collection cannot be scanned or reproduced digitally because of their size, fragility, location, or copyright status.

Remote Access to DC History Center Publications

Volume 25 (Summer 2013)

The DC History Center provides remote, searchable access to our scholarly publications Records of the Columbia Historical Society and Washington History magazine through JSTOR, an online journal repository. Full runs of each publication are available via that platform (1897 – Present) and each article can be downloaded as a PDF.

JSTOR Access

    1. Become a member at the Membership Plus level to receive unlimited access to Records of the Columbia Historical Society and Washington History.
    2. Create a free JSTOR account and receive a number of articles for free.
    3. Many local libraries and other educational institutions (colleges, universities, etc) offer access.

Did you know?
All articles published prior to 1924 are available online for free on JSTOR with or without an account.
