HSW Executive Director John Suau welcomed members of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C. The Guild held their September meeting at the Society’s headquarters.

On September 9, the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C., held their monthly meeting at the Historical Society’s headquarters.  Members of the organization, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2015,  are licensed tour guides who complete a professional development program consisting of guiding skills;  technique training; a written test; and practical assessment, which addresses history, government, and logistical knowledge.

With a mutual interest in sharing the history of the District of Columbia, there is a natural overlap between the memberships of the two organizations. HSW trustee Debra Friedmann, for example,  is a professional tour guide, as is HSW docent Pete McCall. The September meeting offered an opportunity for Guild members to join or renew their membership in the Society; all attendees were encouraged to use the Kiplinger Research Library’s resources to develop content for their tours, and to contribute their skills to the HSW’s programming efforts.

HSW trustee Debra Friedmann and HSW member Pete McCall are both members of the Guild. McCall also serves as a docent for the Society's Window to Washington exhibit.

Following the meeting, Research Services Librarian Laura Barry  and Director of Development Adam Lewis helped Guild members join or renew their membership with the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
