MapStory is an online social cartographic platform developed by the MapStory Foundation since April 2012. Its goal is to empower the community of experts to crowd-source and peer review data within a geospatial and temporal framework. This data can be used to track events across a large area, like the migration of Native Americans throughout North America over the last 300 years, or local topics such as the locations of D.C. public schools before and after segregation.

The Historical Society first partnered with MapStory in December 2013 to present a session on how digitized historical maps can be overlaid on a modern map of D.C. This process can help provide context to historical data. We will explore ways in which the Historical Society can utilize MapStory’s platform to help present D.C. history online to new audiences.
