Dear Reader,
I am so pleased to be writing to you as the newly elected Chair of the DC History Center Board of Trustees. As a fourth generation Washingtonian and someone who is enormously proud of our city, I am honored to lead a board of committed community leaders and to engage with the very talented staff, led by our visionary Executive Director Laura Brower Hagood.
As you know, the DC History Center reaches into all eight wards to preserve and elevate the stories of Washington’s diverse people, neighborhoods, and institutions. We do this work in a welcoming and inclusive way that fosters curiosity and that nurtures civic engagement to strengthen our city for all.
– Our programs, workshops, and tours have resumed following a Covid-induced break. They offer people of all ages and skills an opportunity to engage directly with the history of DC.
– Our premier annual event is the DC History Conference, co-presented with the DC Public Library and HumanitiesDC. This year’s conference, in March at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, was a huge success.
– Our headquarters in the historic Carnegie Library includes exhibits that celebrate and exemplify the history of DC and houses the Kiplinger Research Library, a facility that is second to none for research on Washington topics.
– And our magazine, Washington History, is the only scholarly publication devoted exclusively to the history of our nation’s capital, and it is filled with scholarly articles edited for the general reader.
I am happy to report that the DC History Center is on a solid financial footing and with our well-thought-out strategic plan, we are poised to grow and further our mission in new and exciting ways.
What a great time to be involved with the DC History Center! I look forward to seeing you at a one of our events very soon.
Sincerely,
Chris Wolf
Chair, Board of Trustees
