Sixteenth Street NW: Washington, DC’s Avenue of Ambitions authors John DeFerrari and D. Peter Sefton lead a tour of the elegant northwest neighborhood of Meridian Hill. Learn how wealthy socialite Mary Foote Henderson (1842-1931) stamped her vision and influence on this section of the city. Starting at the site of Henderson’s enormous Romanesque Revival castle, the walk will explore the most notable mansions, embassies, apartment houses, and churches that still define Meridian Hill almost 100 years later. Sites include:

  • Remains of Henderson Castle
  • Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, an Italian-style National Historic Landmark
  • The Envoy, the city’s most expensive apartment building when it opened in 1918
  • Warder-Totten House, torn down and reconstructed along 16th Street
  • The “Pink Palace,” a Gothic Revival mansion once owned by Mrs. Marshall Field
  • All Souls Unitarian Church
  • And more!
