Michael Winston, PhD, Former Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Howard University

This event is the third in the four-part series “Revisiting Washington’s Black History,” co-presented by Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning and the DC History Center.

Howard University, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris’s Alma Mater
A talk by Michael Winston, PhD, former Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Howard University, introduced by Carole Watson, retired Acting Chair, National Endowment for the Humanities

Dr. Winston, through long service at Howard’s highest academic and administrative levels, describes what sets the university apart historically from other American institutions of higher learning.  Its unique role was established by the vision of the founders:  to build the intellectual foundations for a genuinely democratic society on the ruins of a slave society devastated by an enormously destructive war. Dr. Winston was at Howard during the period when Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was a student, including her observations about Howard’s role in promoting international knowledge and understanding.
