***This event is sold out on Eventbrite, but walk-ins are welcome! Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you on Thursday, December 7 at the DC History Center.***
Join us for our annual holiday party—with a book talk featuring two highly anticipated titles about the history of housing in DC! As the air gets colder and the nights get longer this holiday season, home is on the mind. In a city of 670,000 residents, what does home mean in Washington, DC? For many, it’s the iconic row house:
“[T]he most ubiquitous but largely overlooked architecture of the capital.… alongside its monuments, [rowhouses] underscore the importance of the residential architecture built for regular people, the human infrastructure of the nation.”
– The Row House in Washington, DC: A History by Alison K. (Kim) Hoagland
While Alison K. (Kim) Hoagland walks us down rowhouse-lined neighborhood streets, Kim Williams takes us down the alleyways:
“Once home to the city’s most needy residents, [the city’s historic alleyways] are now home to its most privileged.”
– Hidden Alleyways of Washington, DC: A History by Kim Williams
Join Kim Hoagland and Kim Williams at the DC History Center on Thursday, December 7 in conversation with Daniel del Pielago of Empower DC. Together, they’ll help us think about making a home in Washington, DC and the infrastructure of the District’s housing. After the program, join us in Memorial Hall for a community-building hour.
