Start tracing your family history at this beginner friendly, in-person genealogy workshop. No experience needed.
School’s in session! Join this class to explore how your family’s history connects to the present. Genealogist Gigi Nelson offers a foundational introduction, including an overview of all the essential resources at the DC Public Library. Once we know how to get started, we’ll shift into guided activities to begin exploring your own research questions. Participants are welcome to take this workshop on its own or use it as a springboard into future offerings.
This program offered by the DC History Center and DC Public Library gives you the tools and community to get started. Through personal discovery and collective learning, we’ll strengthen community ties and highlight how our family histories connect to the history of Washington, DC. Participants will work through questions together, share stories, ask each other for strategies, and stay connected for support continuing their research.

The DC History Center introduces its Neighborhood History Project Series which aims to study and document the history of often overlooked DC neighborhoods. Our current focus is on Woodridge (Ward 5) and Hillcrest (Ward 7). This series includes archival research, supported by community engagement and dialogue to not only research this history, but encourage connection and programming for current residents.
