Join us in exploring the history of Mount Vernon Square during this two-hour walking tour.

Walking tours aren’t only for tourists! See DC through new eyes on a two-hour walking tour with the DC History Center and Washington Walks. Whether you’ve lived in the District for four months or forty years, there’s something new to learn about Mount Vernon Square.

In 1903, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie gifted a public library to the citizens of the District of Columbia that for over 60 years served Black and White patrons in the city. Today, the old Carnegie Library is home to the DC History Center and an Apple store and remains a complex symbol of philanthropy and diffusion of knowledge. Beyond the building, learn how this Historic District in Downtown Washington, DC remains a crossroads and meeting point, how it changed, and more, including:

  • Where Black veterans protested for equal rights upon their return from World War I.
  • How the Pentecostal Holiness church helped the neighborhood resist urban renewal.

The tour concludes at the DC History Center, where we view:

  • Exterior and interior views of the renovated and restored Carnegie Library.
  • Breathtaking panoramic photographs that relay DC history in captivating detail.
