In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in our region, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. is joining other local cultural institutions in acting to help contain the virus. As a result, we have decided to temporarily close the DC History Center until further notice.
The health, safety, and well-being of our community, including our dedicated volunteers, is a top priority for all of us and we are taking this step as a precautionary measure. Here is some information about how we’re approaching this rapidly changing situation:
- The DC History Center will be closed to the public as of 5pm Friday, March 13. This includes the Kiplinger Research Library, our exhibits, and DC History Center Store, all of which will remain closed until further notice.
- Our small staff will be working remotely, and we intend to continue non-public facing operations and administrative functions in ways that keep our team safe. Because staff access to the collections will be limited, remote reference services and photo order fulfillment will also be on hiatus during this period.
- All programs and field trips scheduled in the month of March are cancelled or postponed. Registrants will receive first notice of any rescheduled dates once regular operations have resumed.
- We will continue our cleaning efforts and expand them by conducting a thorough deep clean of our exhibits, store, and office with the help of our professional cleaning company.
The Historical Society is doing its part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our region. We encourage you to follow the important hygiene guidelines and social distancing recommendations to avoid spreading the virus. We will continue to keep you updated as program schedules and/or access to the DC History Center changes.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and our mission. We wish you, and those you care about, good health in the months ahead.
