EXHIBIT OF 30 LOCAL ARTISTS DEPICTS CHANGING WASHINGTON
Historical Society’s “For the Record: Changing D.C.” exhibits best
paintings and photographs selected by a jury of local museum curators
April 14 – July 16, 2016
WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.’s annual juried competition and exhibition, “For the Record: Changing D.C.”, opens April 14, 2016 in the Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square. This is the second year of this annual program created to preserve scenes of the District’s cityscape.
The exhibit features images of locations from across the city, including the National Arboretum, Lincoln Playground Field House, McMillan, Chinatown, and the Wharf. Program sponsors include Events DC, EHT Traceries, and DC By Foot.
“For over 121 years, the Historical Society has collected art and photography that portrays daily life in Washington,” said John Suau, the Historical Society’s Executive Director. “Collections like those of photographer John Wymer and watercolorist Lily Spandorf provide a unique visual record of the District’s history. For the Record: Changing D.C. continues this tradition and encourages local artists to capture scenes of present-day Washington for future generations.”
The artworks were selected by a jury of experts from local gallery and museum curators, including FotoDC, The George Washington University Museum | The Textile Museum, National Building Museum, and The Phillips Collection. The top three winning artists in two categories will receive a cash prize and up to five works may be chosen by the Historical Society to become a part of its permanent collection.
First, second, and third place winners will be awarded in two categories: Best Photograph and Best Non-Photograph. Of the two first place winners, one will be deemed “Best Overall” and will receive an additional prize. Winners will be unveiled on at the exhibit’s opening reception on April 14; entry for the event is free and open to the public. A special press preview will take place on April 13, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.
The artwork will be available for purchase through an online auction; all proceeds benefit the Historical Society’s mission. The auction will close at the organization’s 122nd anniversary celebration on May 26, 2016. The exhibit will remain open until Saturday July 16, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.
